Have you ever been charged £35 by your bank for going a couple of pound overdrawn for a day or two. I recently added up all my bank charges over the last 6 years and in total, it comes to nearly £2000. Most of these charges are for going less than £5 overdrawn. I would get better rates than this if I went to a loan shark. It is daylight robbery.
Over the next couple of weeks the Office of Fair Trading and the main banks and building societies are going to the High Court to determine whether these costs are actually legal and whether the ‘Unfair Terms in Consumer Contract Regulations’ (UTCCRs) can apply to bank charges. If they’re not legal, people stand a good chance of reclaiming their bank charges for the last 6 years!.
